Best Ways to Care For Hardwood Flooring

Slightly Worn Hardwood Floors

Each time I went to visit my grandmother, her home filled me with a sense of inner peace. Warm and mirrored hardwood floors exposed the heart and veins of time from the wood grain. A faint scent of pine mingling with fresh baked bread hung in the air as it drifted out through the garden door towards the swaying trees, this was heaven. Capturing this feeling is something I have chased my entire adult life.

Finding My Home

House hunting is a daunting task, finding exactly what you want with a tiny budget is not easy for anyone. After viewing over two dozen homes, one had a yard that gave way to a thickly treed yard, but the home was in disrepair. The home was in my budget range, and I am not afraid of working towards what I want, so I purchased my first big dream.

Repair Discovery

After moving into my home, I patched holes in the walls, painted, cleaned and then ripped out 30 year old carpeting. Removing the carpeting revealed the biggest treasure of my home, I had the exact type of hardwood flooring that my grandmother had! Filthy beyond comprehension, I needed to learn how to restore, clean and care for this delightful hardwood floor. Sitting down on my couch to surf the web, I discovered old and new ways of creating the desired floor effect I wanted.

See the End Result in Your Mind

Vibrant HardwoodAnyone can do anything they put their mind to as long as they can see the end result in their mind. My hardwood flooring was loved again, my elbow grease and reading did the trick, and the results were spectacular!

Gliding across my shimmering floors to the wooden banister renewed my spirit and the beauty of my home. A new goal is to maintain their vibrant restored beauty for years to come.

Maintaining your Hardwood Floor (in no particular order):

  • The humidity level of your home should be below 60 percent but above 40 percent.
  • A dry mop can be purchased at your local hardware store (they are washable).
  • Wipe spills up immediately (this prevents discoloration of your floor).
  • Place rugs with slip-resistant backing in high-traffic areas (this prevents scratches and wear).
  • Vacuum only with a felt brush and wand once a week (you can find the best hardwood vacuum for your floor at
  • Sweep or use a dust mop on your floors once a week (more if there is more dirt).
  • Use outdoor and indoor mats in entrances (to reduce what is tracked into the house).
  • Be sure to use mats that can breathe (entrapped moisture can cause damage).
  • Do not drag furniture or appliances over your floor (this can scratch/ gouge the floor).
  • Attach carpeting on the feet of your chairs to stop damage (carpeting side gliding over the floor), or buy protective coverings.
  • Use curtains to cover your windows during the day when the sun is high (prevent damage to the floor).
  • If you wash your floor, use a lightly dampened cloth or sponge (not too wet), and be sure to use a well-respected and recommended hardwood flooring oil-soap. I recommended hand-drying your floor after you wash-wipe it (better safe than sorry).

Our homes reflect who we are, who we want to be and where we want to be. Having the right cleaning tools on hand is just the first step in your journey. I hope you enjoy your home as much as I do!

Dyson DC56

The DC56 is by far my favorite when it comes to cleaning and caring for hardwood floors. It is adequately priced for a Dyson vacuum and it’s designed especially for this floor type. Regardless of whether your floor is covered with dirt, hair, or anything else you can think of, the DC56 gets the job every time. It even comes in multiple colors!

Dyson DC24

The DC24 is another model that I absolutely love but it may not be right for everyone. This vacuum isn’t specific to hardwood flooring and is actually a multi-surface, meaning that it can be used on just about any type of surface. For those of you who are looking for a cleaner that is more affordable than the DC56, or can be used on more than one surface, the DC24 is what I would personally suggest to anyone and everyone.

The third and final vacuum that makes our list is the DC35. Much like the DC24, this cleaner is made for multiple surfaces. However, it is also a powerful handheld that handles much like a weed eater. This is the main reason that I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s easy to use, gets the job done, and very lightweight!

Wooden floors always have swellings or protrusions that are as a result of the plywood trying to penetrate onto the floor. This happens when the joist exerts pressure on the board thereby pushing it upwards. In order to avoid this, you should carefully return the joist back to the same plane as the others. Take precaution to remove any nails on the joist so as to avoid accidents. Also make sure to check the level of the joist with others using a spirit level.

Remove sunken boards

You will also notice sunken plywood boards. These are caused by indention on the joists. In order to bring them back to the same level as others, you can use wood shims. Insert the shims on affected joist while checking the level of others using a spirit level.

Reattach the plywood boards

After making sure that all the damaged areas have been brought back to the desired level, you should then replace the plywood to cover the joists. In case the boards that you removed are also damaged, you can get new ones to use in order to avoid doing the repairs often. In order to ascertain that the floor is leveled, use the spirit level on it again after the work is done.
